Why go

Curiosity flat whites and an experimental pour over

The drinks board at Carnival Coffee Roasters changes with the season and is built from the roastery’s own coffee: single origin espresso drinks, a rotating curiosity flat white, and an experimental pour over menu that exists to give the odder lots somewhere to go. This is a counter attached to a working roastery rather than a shop buying its beans in from elsewhere.

The coffees carry their own descriptions. Black Condor from Colombia runs caramel, blackcurrant and chocolate; La Danta from Peru is raisin, custard and red apple pie; Mount Sunzu PB from Zambia is dark chocolate, almond and panela. Rather than lean on one house blend, the programme is origin-led, and the espresso list changes as lots turn over. One of the co-owners talks about buying from the company’s own farm in Medellin and from reputable small-scale importers, with farmer welfare and sustainable development treated as part of the purchase.

A roastery that teaches

Carnival works as a destination shop and a production base at once, and the teaching side is unusually visible. Free coffee tastings and workshops run out of the same building the beans are roasted in, so the counter connects directly to buying, roasting, brewing and sensory work.

The trade side extends it. Wholesale customers get regular barista training, equipment procurement and setup, machine supply, rental and servicing, and custom roast development, and in March 2023 the company published a startup guide for new South East London cafés. Retail runs across espresso, filter, decaf, subscriptions, bundles and brewing equipment, which gives the roastery a broader spine than a standard counter.

Start with the curiosity flat white

If you take one drink, take the curiosity flat white. It is the named signature and the one that carries whatever the roastery is most interested in that season, which makes it a fair read of the whole operation.

For the most direct sense of roast and origin, order a single origin espresso drink, where the buying shows up in a short cup with nothing to hide behind. For a slower visit, the experimental pour over menu suits the changing lots and the flavour-led way they are described. The subscription follows the same rhythm, sending a different coffee each month with the option to pause or change it, so however you come at Carnival, it is built around rotation rather than a fixed list.
