A railway station is not where you expect to find a roastery, which is most of the appeal of Café de Fleur. It sits inside Vienna's Westbahnhof at Europaplatz, serving specialty coffee to a concourse that otherwise runs on convenience, and it roasts as well as pours. It is credited as the first specialty coffee spot to open inside a railway station, which is less a novelty than a statement about who the bar expects to serve.

That combination gives the café a sharper profile than a station counter usually has. Coffee is the programme rather than an accessory to a food menu, and the bar is set up for people who know what they are ordering as much as for those grabbing something before a train. The standard for coffee in a concourse is usually set low, so a bar that roasts its own is doing something the setting does not require of it.

Warm and woody, in a concourse

The room is warm and woody, which does a great deal of work in a building made of glass, steel and departure boards. It gives the café a sense of place inside a space designed for movement, and makes it possible to sit with a coffee rather than drink it walking.

The audience shifts through the day: travellers before departures, people from the surrounding 15th district in the middle of the day, commuters passing back through later on. The café has to work for all of them, from a two-minute espresso to a slower cup at a table, which is a harder brief than a quiet side-street room faces.

Keep the order simple

Order coffee and judge the place on that. The house roasts its own, so an espresso or a filter is the most direct test of what the bar can do, and the specialty framing means it should stand up to the comparison with anything in the city centre.

Food is not the reason to come. There is no signature pastry to chase and no kitchen story attached, so treat it as a coffee stop that happens to be in a station rather than a station café that happens to serve coffee. That is the distinction worth arriving with, and it is what makes the detour through Westbahnhof worthwhile.
