Birdy The Bakery (Chiaia)

The counter runs long, with refrigerated cases set into it, and the cakes behind the glass are American: Red Velvet, New York cheesecake, angel food cake. Birdy opened in Chiaia in 2012 as the first of its bakeries and still presents itself as the original American bakery in Naples.

This is the flagship of a brand that later spread to Portici and to Maximall Pompeii in Torre Annunziata, and the Chiaia room is where the idea started: American cakes, breakfast plates, coffee-break food and casual daytime dishes worked into a Neapolitan setting rather than a classic Neapolitan pastry shop. The branch also carries the retail side of the business, where cakes, custom cakes and boxes are ordered ahead and collected in store, so it is more than a place to eat a slice standing up. Birdy puts its first bakery in the heart of Naples, in what the brand calls the city's most glamorous neighbourhood, and the branch has kept that founding role as the business has grown.

Brunch pace behind a long bar counter

The room is casual, bright and brunch-oriented, built for breakfast, a mid-morning coffee and relaxed daytime meals rather than formal dining. The decor is modern and whimsical, lively rather than hushed. The front of house is organised around that large bar counter with its refrigerated display cases, which sets the rhythm of the place, though drinks arrive at tables and a host greets guests at the door, so it sits somewhere between a bakery counter, a cafe and a seated brunch room. It works for lingering over a plate and equally for collecting a cake ordered days earlier.

Order Red Velvet first, then decide how hungry you are

Red Velvet is the logical opening because it leads the house lineup, alongside New York cheesecake, angel food cake and Birdymisu, the tiramisu variation that gives the menu its most house-specific twist. The Emotion Box Breakfast Edition and Birdy's Dollar Egg belong to the same branded family, built as much for gifting and takeaway as for the table.

The American direction is clearest when the sweet and savoury sides are read together: large pancakes, cheesecake, Red Velvet and brunch plates. If the visit is a coffee break, one cake is enough. If it is brunch, start with the pancakes and treat the cake case as dessert, or as something boxed on the way out.
