Why go

Froyo, brought back on purpose

The pitch is on the wall: where did all the froyo go, and then the answer, froyo is back. Birdie's opened in the West Village in early 2026 and drew a line in genuinely cold weather, which is a fair measure of how much appetite there was for the format. The shop is named after the owner's Brussels Griffon, which tells you the origin story is personal rather than corporate. The founder grew up in Los Angeles, where frozen yogurt shops were somewhere to sit with friends and family rather than somewhere to buy dessert and leave, and that memory is what the New York City version has been built to reproduce.

A small room built around choosing

The space is compact and counter-led, roughly 700 square feet, designed with a childhood friend who now works in interior design. Guests pick flavours and toppings at the counter in the back, pass through the candy area, then find one of the few tables. The intended feeling is warm and timeless, wide enough in appeal to work whether you are eight or eighty, and that intergenerational idea matters more than it sounds: this is not framed as a dessert bar, a pastry shop or a restaurant. It is a small, self-directed stop for frozen yogurt, gummy candy and a quick social pause, and the handful of tables keep it closer to a neighbourhood hangout than a destination. It is the kind of room where deciding what to have takes longer than eating it.

Order vanilla or chocolate raspberry, then cookie dough

The flavour list is short and specific. Vanilla is the straightforward order and the one that shows the base most clearly, which leans creamy and reads closer to soft serve than to tart yogurt. Peanut Butter Tart pushes in a nuttier, tangier direction, Chocolate Raspberry Tart brings fruit and chocolate together, and Vegan Chocolate covers dairy-free within the same format. Toppings are the point as much as the yogurt, and the made-from-scratch chocolate chip cookie dough is the one to ask for first. Candy is not decoration here either: the signature mixes come as Sour Mix, Chocolate Mix and Sweet Mix, and gummy candy is sold alongside. A strong first order is vanilla or chocolate raspberry tart with cookie dough, then a candy mix chosen by mood.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Birdie's?

Start with vanilla or chocolate raspberry tart and add the made-from-scratch chocolate chip cookie dough, which is the topping the shop is proudest of. Peanut Butter Tart is the nuttier, tangier option and Vegan Chocolate covers dairy-free. Then pick a candy mix by mood: Sour Mix, Chocolate Mix or Sweet Mix.

Does the frozen yogurt taste tart?

Less than the name suggests. The base leans creamy and eats closer to soft serve ice cream than to the sharp frozen yogurt the format is remembered for, which is part of why the shop reads as nostalgic rather than austere. The tart edge shows up more in the flavours themselves, such as Peanut Butter Tart and Chocolate Raspberry Tart.
