The rule you notice first at Do Not Feed Alligators is the one about laptops: there are none. The room is built for reading, talking or sitting still, and the coffee is multi-roaster, so what is on the bar changes rather than coming from a single house supply. Espresso and milk drinks carry the daytime, with tea alongside them.

Because nothing is roasted here, the interest is in the rotation. What the bar has chosen this month, and how it is being pulled, is the whole conversation, and it is a reasonable way to taste your way around several roasters without leaving one counter.

An art bookstore that serves drinks

The other half of the room is a bookshop. Art books line the front, and they are stock rather than decoration, which is what makes the laptop rule work: people come to sit with a book and a cup, not to set up an office for the afternoon.

It is a small West Village room and a designed one, closer to a front-of-house than to a workspace. Few places in New York City make a bookshelf the reason to sit down, and fewer still hold the line on it once the room fills.

After dark it turns into a bar

The same counter switches in the evening. Wine and cocktails replace the coffee, the light drops, and the room takes on a bar’s rhythm without changing shape. That double life is the point of the place: a morning cup and an evening glass in the same seat.

Go early for coffee and books, late for a drink. Either way the room asks for your attention rather than your screen, which is the trade it offers: less convenience, more of the afternoon back.
