The bar at Bean There Co. runs on specialty coffee and on a line the house keeps repeating, “good people, specialty coffee,” which works more like a rule than a slogan. The room itself is a former slibvijzel gemaal, a sludge-screw pumping station, so the hospitality happens inside a piece of reused Amsterdam waterworks rather than a blank retail unit. The founder built the place around the idea that a cup is an experience shaped by intention and attention, and what came out of that is a neighbourhood coffee room with a teaching habit: cupping sessions, events through the year, and a counter where the staff will talk through origin, water and extraction if you give them the opening.

Cupping sessions and a bar that explains itself

The coffee side is built to be discussed rather than simply served. Origins are part of the conversation, and so is water, which is the sort of detail a bar only raises when it is paying attention to how the cup is actually made. The cupping sessions are the clearest expression of that: an open invitation to taste comparatively and put language to what is in the glass, which is unusual for a café this size.
