Why go

Small-batch roasting on the Caparica coast

Order a flat white and the beans in the grinder were roasted on the same premises. Asante works as a specialty coffee shop and a boutique roastery at once in Costa de Caparica, roasting in small batches to keep the coffee fresh and selling it whole bean off the same shelves, in Portuguese and English for a town that draws locals and visitors in equal measure.

The retail coffee list shows the range: Brazil Fazenda Camponesa natural, Panama Chiriqui natural, Rwanda Kirambo natural, Costa Rica Guanacaste washed, Rwanda Cyato washed, Colombia Huila microlot washed, Peru organic washed and Kenya Gatina Nyeri washed. Natural and washed processing, African and Latin American origins, a microlot and an organic lot, which gives the bar a broad vocabulary for espresso, filter and take-home brewing.

A counter with a shop attached

The room is stylish, comfortable and welcoming, polished enough for a slow coffee break or a casual meeting, with indoor and outdoor seats and multilingual service at the counter. Ordering is straightforward: choose at the till, then take a table inside or out, or carry the cup down towards the beach. Dine-in and takeaway both work, and the outdoor seats fill first on a bright day.

Around the café sits a full equipment shop: espresso machines, filter machines, brewers, grinders, scales, kettles, cups, mugs, accessories and consumables, with Acaia, Aeropress, Chemex, Comandante, Fellow, Hario, La Marzocco, Moccamaster, Sage, Timemore and Victoria Arduino on the shelves. It makes the visit as much about browsing as about drinking, and it explains why the coffee list reads like a roaster’s rather than a café’s. The shelf turns over quickly enough that the retail bags and the coffee on the bar are the same age, which is the practical advantage of roasting on site.

Flat white first, then the pistachio croissant

Start with a flat white for a direct read on the milk side, then choose cold brew, batch brew, cappuccino, latte or an oat milk latte depending on the cup you want. Pour-over is the option that best follows the roaster’s origin work, and there is a good tea selection for anyone off coffee.

Food stays pastry-led and simple. Croissants are the standing signature, with pistachio croissants tied to weekends, and cinnamon rolls and granola with yoghurt filling out the breakfast side. Vegan and vegetarian options run through the case.
