Why go

Filter coffee comes first here, roasted a few metres from where it is poured, in a building that is also seven apartments.

A roastery with rooms above it

7g Roaster is not a standalone coffee bar. It runs as 7g Roaster & Apartments, a specialty roastery, cafe and seven-apartment hospitality project near the Gaia quay, established in 2017, with the name pointing at both the seven rooms and Gaia itself. The idea came from linking private apartments to a specialised cafe with an in-house roastery, and a barista lead was in place from the beginning to run sourcing, roasting and the bar. What came out of it is shaped by coffee education, hospitality and traceability rather than by a brunch formula with a machine in the corner. Seven apartments sit above the coffee, which is why the room reads as hospitality rather than as a shop that happens to have tables.

Traceability in the cup

The coffee programme is the clearest reading of the place. Roasting happens in Vila Nova de Gaia on carefully chosen origins, with the stated aim of letting each bean's character show, and the sourcing turns on traceability, seasonality, consumer education and sensory selection. The retail shelf shows the rotation behind the bar: Kenya Lot 20, Indonésia Kintamani, Colômbia Manos Juntas, Colômbia El Indio decaf and Colômbia Jefferson Motta. Drinks run from filter coffee and cold brew to an espresso affogato with vanilla ice cream on warm days, with craft beer and wine for later hours.

The work has been recognised beyond Portugal: 30th on The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops in 2026, and a place in the 2025 European Coffee Trip awards, with particular attention to its work making traceable, ethically sourced coffee ordinary rather than exceptional.

Filter, cold brew and a plate

Start with filter coffee if you want the origin and the roasting foregrounded, or cold brew for the cooler version of the same idea. The affogato is the dessert route, espresso poured over vanilla ice cream.

Food makes the room work beyond a quick cup: local pastry, brunch, wraps, eggs Benedict, healthy plates and sandwiches, with house hummus and pita, a spinach tortilla and a tofu salad on the savoury side. The setting adds the last layer, contemporary specialty roasting in historic Gaia, a short walk from the wine cellars the district is known for. The brunch end of the menu is broad enough to hold a full meal, which suits a quarter people tend to walk through slowly.
