White Label Coffee roasts its own and the list keeps moving: Ethiopian coffees, washed and unwashed, and Brazilians recur, while the rest change every few months as harvests come and go. Recent lots have run to Ethiopia Banko Gotiti natural, Colombia Exotico washed, Rwanda Bushenge washed and Guatemala El Sendero washed. The roasting aim is stated plainly, to develop the aromas fully without taking the roast dark, so origin flavour comes through without bitterness.
A cafe attached to a working roastery
The West cafe is one part of a larger operation that also runs a webshop, a subscription and a wholesale arm, and the company advises its wholesale partners on coffee, equipment and staff training. It was founded in 2014 by two people who had been working in the Amsterdam coffee scene and decided to build their own, and it describes itself simply as specialty coffee roasters from Amsterdam, with roasting diversity, quality, openness and cooperation as the stated values. Bags from the roastery are sold across the counter as well as online.
A bright room for lingering
The room is bright and inviting, white walls and blonde wood floors softened by rugs, whimsical artwork and healthy houseplants. It is not a formal dining room and it does not try to be a food-led venue; it is a place for a laptop and a long pause as much as a quick cup. Coffee is the whole offer, with no tea or matcha programme beside it. The competitive record sits quietly behind the everyday service: in March 2015 the cafe and roastery took gold and bronze at the Dutch AeroPress Championship. Between that, the European wholesale work and the origin-focused writing on its Brazilian and Rwandan coffees, White Label belongs to Amsterdam's specialty coffee network rather than its casual cafe map.
