Village Coffee

Coffee is roasted to order a few metres from where it is poured, and oat milk is the default in every milk drink unless you ask otherwise. Two small decisions that tell you most of what Village Coffee is.

Village Coffee is the café side of Village Coffee Roasting Co., roasting in Fontenay-sous-Bois on the eastern edge of Paris and selling the results across the counter and off the shelf. The house phrasing is “delicately home-roasted,” and the roasting is done to order rather than in advance, which is unusual for a room this size.

The format stays simple: order at the counter, take a seat, food from the display rather than a kitchen. Everything is presented in French and English, so the room works as easily for a Fontenay regular as for a visitor. European Coffee Trip put it on its 2025 awards list, which is the recognition worth knowing about.

Milk drinks, filter, and a laptop policy

The espresso du jour comes as a single or a double, and the milk drinks run cortado, flat white, latte, cappuccino and mocha, plus flavoured versions including a white chocolate and speculoos latte. Oat milk is standard and cow's milk is there for anyone who asks. Filter drinkers choose batch brew, Aeropress, a V60 by the cup, or a Chemex made for three to four.

Non-coffee is unusually well covered. Black tea, Earl Grey, chai rooibos, a chai latte built on spiced rooibos and oat milk, matcha latte, hot chocolate, babyccino, lemonade, organic fruit juice and kombucha all sit on the board, with iced latte, espresso frappé and espresso tonic for warm afternoons.

Come to talk, not to work

The house has a view about laptops and states it plainly. There is no Wi-Fi. Computers are not welcome on Fridays and Saturdays, and are tolerated from Tuesday to Thursday only when the room is calm, with a request to give up a seat when other people are waiting for one. This is a café that wants conversation at its tables.

That makes the first order easy. Take a flat white to judge the roast through milk, or an espresso tonic if the weather suits it, and stay long enough for a second. The room gets busy at peak times, which is what happens when a small neighbourhood roastery pours its own coffee this far east of central Paris.
