The cafe sits in Queens where Long Island City meets Astoria, and it is homey and small, with about six tables. That is the most useful thing to know about it. Weekday mornings are calm, with seats free and the counter unhurried. Weekends are the opposite: lines, full tables and a food menu that pulls people in from beyond the neighbourhood. It absorbs a casual meet-up, a quick coffee break or a slow weekend sit depending on when you turn up, and most of the custom is people coming back rather than passing through. There is Wi-Fi and people do work here, though a laptop is harder to justify when every table is turning.

What to order

Take the Matcha Einspanner first, since it defines the place better than a plain matcha latte would. Then the egg sando, the clearest savoury order, soft bread with an eggy filling and a crunchy top. On weekends the kitchen goes further, as far as a scallop hand roll made with Hokkaido scallop, and the pastries and small bites fill in around it without turning the cafe into a restaurant.
