Why go

Natural sourdough and a new bread every weekend

Utopie works with natural sourdoughs and long fermentation, which is why the bread carries a light acidity, and it transforms its raw materials in house rather than reselling anything but drinks. l’Authentic is the star loaf. Around it sit pain muesli, made with T65 and rye flour, hazelnuts and dried fruit; pain aux noix; a green tea bread with puffed rice; an Auvergnat loaf; a charcoal baguette; and an olive, feta and herb bread that appears at weekends. The flour comes from Moulins de Chars, and the butter and milk are French. The rhythm is not limited to the classics either: every weekend the team makes a new bread, a new viennoiserie and a new pastry, alongside seasonal and short-lived items. The bakery is a neighbourhood shop in the 11th arrondissement and a workshop at the same time.

A compact case with the bakers behind it

This is a counter bakery organised around the case rather than a seated café. The sequence runs pastries first, in large and individual formats, brioche loaves above them, breads behind, and viennoiseries by the till. Some bread is sold by weight and sliced to order on the board, so you can take a slice or a larger piece rather than a whole loaf.

Weekend mornings bring a line onto the pavement, and lunch is busy because the savoury side runs well past bread and sweets into sandwiches, quiches, pizzas, salads and a hot cheese sandwich on focaccia. Behind the register a doorway shows the bakers at work, which makes the shop feel like a retail counter attached to a working production room, which is exactly what it is. The space is compact and can feel crowded at peak hours.

Order l’Authentic, then the sesame éclair

Start with l’Authentic if bread is the errand, then add pain muesli for the hazelnut and dried fruit, or the charcoal baguette for its graphic dark colour. The interest in charcoal is presented as design rather than a health claim, and it turns up again in a sesame and food-grade charcoal Swiss roll and a roulé au sésame with activated charcoal and black sesame. Core viennoiseries include croissants, pain au chocolat, pain aux raisins, pain suisse, roulés and apple turnovers, with weekend one-offs such as a raspberry and coconut flower or a dark chocolate and lemon roll. For pastry, remember the sesame éclair, the flan, the apple tart, the cheesecake and the lemon tart. The bakery took the Meilleure Boulangerie de France title in 2016, and one of its bakers won the 2024 prize for the best traditional baguette in Paris.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Utopie?

Take l'Authentic if you are here for bread, then pain muesli for the hazelnut and dried fruit, or the charcoal baguette for the colour. On the pastry side the sesame éclair is the signature, with flan, apple tart, cheesecake and lemon tart behind it. Croissants and pain au chocolat cover the viennoiserie.

What makes the bread at Utopie different?

Natural sourdough and long fermentation, which leave the loaves lightly acidic, and flour from Moulins de Chars with French butter and milk. Everything except the drinks is made on the premises. Every weekend the bakers add a new bread, a new viennoiserie and a new pastry, so the range shifts week to week rather than staying fixed.
