Why go
A bakery, a home and a room of restored furniture
The bread comes out daily and the furniture is for sale, and the two halves are the same project. Tulipane is a women-run bakery and café in central Rome, organised around three ideas its founders call casa, forno and arredi: home, bakery and furnishings in one room. One of them leads the bread after fifteen years at Gambero Rosso, including work on its bread and pizza guides. The other is a furniture consultant and space designer, and the room is her half of the project. The name folds a tulip into pane, which is roughly the whole thesis.
Bread is made daily with agricultural flours from a direct network of farmers, breeders and small producers, ancient grains included, and the selection changes with the day. Loaves are meant for the table and for taking home, and bread runs through the rest of the menu as an ingredient rather than as a side.
No sign on the door
The storefront carries no street signage, so arriving feels closer to entering a private apartment than a shop. Inside, reclaimed furniture, one-off artisanal pieces and 1950s modernariato set the tone, with colour and fabric combined by instinct rather than by rule, and the pastries laid out in the case like jewellery.
The day has two speeds. Mornings run on pastry and coffee, including a cappuccino made with oat milk, in the manner of a quick Roman breakfast stop. Later the room slows into brunch, which varies from Monday to Friday and traces the same network of farmers and artisans that supplies the bread. Tulipane also hosts bread evenings under the name Stasera Pane, where conversation is followed by bread dishes and wine.
Tre Pani bread, then everything built on it
Tulipane holds Gambero Rosso's Tre Pani for 2026, and the bread is where to start: a daily loaf made with ancient grains and flours chosen for the territory, bought by weight and carried out. It is the clearest thing the bakery does.
Then eat something built on it. Brunch is where bread becomes a dish rather than a product, and the savoury range runs to pizza, focaccia, stuffed pizza, sandwiches, fish and piatti campagnoli, which gives the café a rustic lunch dimension alongside the counter. On the sweet side, lemon pie, cookies and morning pastries are the names to know. Wine appears at events, and the bread evenings are the fullest version of the place: a bakery that treats bread as culture as much as product.
Frequently asked questions
What should you order at Tulipane?
Start with the bread, which holds Gambero Rosso's Tre Pani for 2026 and is baked daily with ancient grains and flours from a direct network of farmers. Then eat something built on it at brunch, or take pizza, focaccia or a stuffed pizza. Lemon pie and cookies cover the sweet side.
How do you find Tulipane in Rome?
With difficulty the first time, because the storefront carries no street signage. Inside, the room is furnished with reclaimed pieces, one-off artisanal objects and 1950s modernariato, and the pastries are laid out in the case like jewellery, which is the point of the casa, forno and arredi idea.
