Halal bagels with a Mediterranean accent

Bagels are handmade daily at TOASTED. Bagels & Coffee, and the whole menu is halal, which is the point rather than a footnote. The bagel list covers the familiar shapes, plain and sesame and a jalapeño cheddar, but the sandwiches pull the shop away from the standard New York template and toward the Mediterranean: a Date & Labneh Everything Bagel sits on the same board as a Classic NYC Lox.

The ingredient list follows that same pull, with pears from Eastern Washington and olive oil from Jerusalem turning up in the fillings. Coffee is treated as part of the order rather than something to wash it down with, and chai and tea sit beside it. The U District shop in Seattle spent a long stretch under a coming-soon sign before it finally opened, and a pastry side rounds out a menu built for a single decisive visit.

A counter built for a short queue

The rhythm is quick service: a bagel sandwich, a drink, and possibly something sweet. Seating is minimal and most of the traffic leaves with a bag, which suits a university neighbourhood where the same order repeats every morning. Nothing about the room asks you to stay, and the menu is short enough that the decision usually happens before you reach the front.

What keeps it from being a generic bagel counter is how completely the halal framing is built in. It shapes what goes on the breakfast sandwiches, which is why the Turkey BEC exists in the form it does, and it means the whole board is open to customers who normally have to read one carefully.

Order the Date and Labneh Everything first

Start with the Date & Labneh Everything Bagel. It is the sharpest expression of the Mediterranean side of the menu, and it uses the everything bagel's salt and seed against a sweet, tangy filling. It also tells you quickly whether the bagels themselves are being made properly, because there is nothing on it to hide behind.

From there the Classic NYC Lox is the familiar reference point and the Turkey BEC is the breakfast order, both worth a return visit rather than a crowded first one. An egg and cheese on a jalapeño cheddar bagel is the simplest way in. For the drink, order the turmeric chai at least once instead of the coffee.
