Visible roasting in Ehrenfeld
Roasting happens in front of you here, which is the whole point of Schamong. The Ehrenfeld shop is Cologne’s oldest coffee roastery, trading since 1949, and it is better understood as a working roastery that also serves coffee than as a café with a roaster for decoration. The machine is a cast-iron Probat UG 15n drum roaster, used by the Schamong family for more than half a century, and every bean sold in the shop passes through it. Roasted batches are then checked by hand for impurities. From the street the impression is old Cologne craft: a large window with golden lettering, the houses of Ehrenfeld reflected in the glass, and the roaster visible almost as soon as you step inside.
The roastery leads, the café follows
The café experience follows the logic of the roastery. The range is organised around espresso, filter and blends, with tea, capsules, equipment, merchandise and gift vouchers filling out the shelves beside them. Coffee teaching is part of the ecosystem: there is a Kaffeekompass to help choose between the coffees, a programme of barista seminars, and the city’s first coffee academy, which taught seven rules for preparing a proper espresso. A roastmaster is responsible for the roast profiles. The room itself is retro and aromatic, shaped by storage containers and machinery rather than soft furnishings, and seating is limited both inside and out, so the rhythm is retail-first: come in, watch the production, drink a coffee, leave with beans.
Order the Kölner Melange first
Start with the Kölner Melange, the house blend tied to the city: bitter chocolate, orange and herb notes, built from 100% Arabica grown in Costa Rica, Brazil and Colombia. For espresso, Lion of Judah is the named option, a 100% Arabica direct-trade Ethiopian. Filter and decaf drinkers have their own coffees to work from, including La Cristalina, a 100% Arabica direct-trade Colombian sold as a decaffeinated filter. Volcán Azul brings another lot into the range, with cashew and blackberry notes and a full body, and the WE:FC collaboration roast sits alongside them. Tea is stocked, but the programme is unmistakably coffee-led. Food stays narrow, a filled croissant or a red velvet cookie rather than a kitchen. Pair one with a coffee and let the roaster and the bean shelves carry the visit.
