Why go
Two coffees on the bar, a question about which suits the drink, and the order follows from the answer: that is how the counter works at Prufrock, the Leather Lane specialty cafe that has been pouring since 2011. It is unusually large for a London coffee shop of its type, with big windows, a long brew bar and a retail shelf that makes it a place to buy beans as well as drink them.
A bar built for extraction
The espresso setup is competition-grade: a Victoria Arduino VA388 Black Eagle with matching grinders, and reverse osmosis water so extraction is controlled from the mains onward. Espresso, piccolo and latte cover the drinks, but the calibration is the point, and staff are used to talking through what is in the hopper before anything is pulled.
The roasting connection runs through Square Mile Coffee Roasters, long associated with the cafe, whose coffees have been sold on the retail shelf here. Barista training and coffee education sit behind the counter too, which is part of why the room has the reputation it does beyond its own postcode. The European Coffee Trip awards recognised it in 2025.
A big room on a market street
Prufrock is a sit-in cafe as much as a takeaway counter. The design is spare, the light is good, and a seat opposite the brew bar turns drink-making into part of the visit. Leather Lane is a busy weekday market street, but the cafe sits slightly off the tourist path, so a table is easier to find here than at most central coffee stops.
The crowd splits between regulars who work nearby and coffee travellers who came deliberately, and neither group gets in the other’s way. The rhythm is walk in, sit down or take away, with no formality attached.
What to order
Start with espresso if the aim is to taste the extraction directly, a piccolo for a smaller milk drink, or a latte for something longer. Because staff will tell you which of the coffees on bar suits which format, treat the conversation as part of the order rather than an interruption.
Food is more substantial than a pastry case. Everything is scratch-made with ingredients the cafe calls sustainably sourced, and the kitchen has grown in prominence over the years: an avocado salad with poached eggs is big enough to carry an afternoon, and cakes rotate, with a rosemary and strawberry version among them. If beans are on the shelf, take a bag home; that is half of what the room is for.

What should I order at Prufrock Coffee?
Espresso if the aim is to taste the extraction directly, a piccolo for a smaller milk drink or a latte for something longer. Can you buy coffee beans at Prufrock?
Yes. Square Mile Coffee Roasters has long been associated with the cafe and its coffees have been sold on the retail shelf here, which makes the room a place to buy beans as well as drink them.
