Four Bouillet universes in one case

Pâtisseries, macarons, chocolates and glaces: the Bouillet house divides its work into four, and the Avenue des Frères Lumière shop presents all of them at once. This is the Monplaisir branch of Maison Bouillet, the Lyon pâtisserie-chocolaterie founded in 1977 in Croix-Rousse by Henri Bouillet and now led by his son Sébastien Bouillet. It is a Relais Desserts member.

The house catalogue also files it as Pâtisserie Frères Lumière, which is worth knowing because Bouillet keeps seven addresses around Lyon and they are not interchangeable. The Croix-Rousse original, the Tassin shop, the counter at the Halles Paul Bocuse, the Café Bouillet and the Goûter shops all do different jobs. Lyon 8 is a boutique: a case to choose from rather than a room to sit in.

What the counter actually does

Come for cake and chocolate work rather than bread, breakfast or a savoury lunch. The pâtisserie side runs to individual gâteaux; the chocolate side to bars and boxes; the macaron side to colour and volume; and the glaces make the shop a summer stop as much as a winter one.

Seasonal releases keep the case moving. A peach and vanilla pavlova has appeared as a weekend-only piece, the kind of thing that exists for two days and then goes, which is a good reason to look at the fresh shelf before deciding anything in advance. The glaces follow the same logic, treated as a house category with their own creations rather than a freezer cabinet parked by the door.

How to choose

Compare across the four categories rather than hunting for one signature. A single gâteau, a small box of macarons and one chocolate bar is the most efficient way to understand what the house is doing, and it travels better than a whole cake. Buy for the same day when the pastry is fresh cream and fruit, and for later when it is chocolate.

If the glaces are on, take one as the tiebreaker in warm weather. If a weekend-only pastry is in the case, it deserves priority over the permanent range, since it will not be there the following week. And if the visit is about gifts, the chocolate and macaron boxes are built for exactly that, which is why this branch works as well for an errand as for a treat.
