Why go

Viennese style, locally roasted coffee

The counter runs on locally roasted coffee, with Full City Rooster beans behind the espresso and the drip and bags of the same coffee sold to take home. That local roasting is the anchor of an otherwise European idea: an upscale Viennese-style café built into The Adolphus, downtown Dallas’s grand old hotel, and open to the street as much as to the guests upstairs. It opened in 2018 and has kept the format tight since, with coffee and espresso drinks, teas, sodas and a short list of house specialities rather than a sprawling menu. Fresh drip coffee, a chai tea latte, iced drinks and a bluebonnet matcha give the board its shape, and a mocha covers the sweeter end.

Dark wood, marble, and a walk-up window

The room is refined and a little nostalgic: dark wood, polished marble tabletops, and an atmosphere closer to a library crossed with a pub than a modern coffee bar. It suits reading, a slow catch-up, or the kind of morning that starts with a newspaper rather than a laptop, and it borrows some of the hotel’s own weight without becoming stiff about it. For anyone in a hurry there is a walk-up window on the street outside, so the same coffee can be taken without entering the hotel at all. Those two speeds are what make the café work through the day, from an early drip coffee to an afternoon break to a later stop for tea or something iced.

Order the chai, the matcha, or a pastry

Take the local Full City Rooster coffee if the point of the visit is the house coffee identity, or an espresso drink if that is the preferred format. Fresh drip is the plainest and most honest version of it. On the tea side, the chai tea latte is the named order to know, and the bluebonnet matcha is the one drink here that could not come from anywhere else. Pair whichever you choose with a pastry, since the pastries are made fresh daily and are the strongest part of the food. Breakfast and lunch run to grab-and-go, with sandwiches and breakfast plates including an egg white, chicken sausage and spinach build. Liège waffles were the signature sweet at the walk-up window when the café opened, and they still fit the European pastry mood better than anything else on the counter.
