Why go
The Mayan Mocha is the drink that explains Osmium Coffee Bar: espresso with chocolate, cinnamon, agave and enough cayenne to leave an edge. Osmium is Dark Matter Coffee's Lakeview room in Chicago, opened in July 2014 as the company's third retail site and its first outside Ukrainian Village, following The Star Lounge and The Mothership.
Dark Matter beans, flavoured espresso, coffee on tap
The coffee is roasted by Dark Matter and drawn from its relationship-coffee partners, with single-origin espresso and drip sourced from farms in Mexico and El Salvador. That gives the black-coffee side real substance underneath the flavoured drinks the bar is better known for.
The signature list leans sweet and spiced: Mayan Mocha, agave latte, the cinnamon and chocolate agave latte, barrel-aged mocha, iced Chocolate City and Wake n Bake. Iced coffee on tap is the simplest cold route. Food is partner-driven rather than cooked on site, with Do-Rite doughnuts, West Town Bakery pastries, a herb and goat cheese croissant, a cinnamon twist danish and Sauce & Bread sandwiches. Steingold's bagels and Cafe Tola empanadas turn up in the rotation too.
A loud coffee bar, not a dining room
Osmium is a lively specialty coffee bar with an ample bar and limited seating, still carrying Dark Matter's science-fiction, steampunk and funk design language. The fitout is bright, with eclectic artwork and an outdoor patio, and it runs table service, which is a departure from other Dark Matter rooms.
The practical feel is busy and social. People use it for coffee, study, laptop work and meeting friends, and order names get called across a room that carries sound. The food setup points the same way: pastries, doughnuts, bagels, empanadas, sandwiches and small bites supporting the drinks, not a full kitchen.
Order the Mayan Mocha first
Start with the Mayan Mocha because it captures the house style most directly, chocolate and spice and agave built over espresso with cayenne doing the sharpening. If you want a second Dark Matter signature, move to the cinnamon and chocolate agave latte, the plain agave latte, the barrel-aged mocha, or iced coffee on tap.
For a straight coffee stop, the espresso drinks and drip built on Dark Matter's single origins are the cleaner read on the roasting. Add a Sauce & Bread sandwich if the visit needs something savoury, or a herb and goat cheese croissant with the first cup. Osmium appears in both the Eater Coffee Guide and the Infatuation Coffee Guide for 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What should I order at Osmium Coffee Bar?
The Mayan Mocha, which builds chocolate, cinnamon, agave and cayenne over espresso and is the clearest expression of the house style. After that, try the cinnamon and chocolate agave latte, the barrel-aged mocha or iced coffee on tap. For straight coffee, the single-origin espresso and drip show the roasting best.
Who roasts the coffee at Osmium?
Dark Matter Coffee, which owns the bar. Osmium was the company's third retail location and its first outside Ukrainian Village. The beans come through Dark Matter's relationship-coffee partners, including farms in Mexico and El Salvador, and they are used for both the single-origin espresso and the drip coffee.
Can you work at Osmium Coffee Bar?
People do, and the bar has table service and an outdoor patio, but seating is limited and the room is loud. Order names are called across the space and the crowd is social rather than studious, so it suits a short laptop session better than a long quiet one.
