Maison Oberweis makes its chocolate from the cocoa bean up, which is rare anywhere and unmatched in Luxembourg. Gare Centrale is the family's station branch, a retail counter rather than a tea room, and the whole range is compressed into a case you can read in a minute.

A three-generation house at station speed

Oberweis has been making sweet and savoury things in Luxembourg for more than sixty years, across three generations and now several hundred staff. The chocolate line carries the most weight, since the house works from bean to finished bar rather than buying couverture and moulding it. Around it sit the pastry specialities, cakes, macarons and ice cream creations, including seasonal flavours sold in pots. The savoury side is real rather than decorative, with sandwiches, pâté and terrine made to the same standard as the sweet counter, which is why this branch gets used for lunch as often as for a box of chocolates.

A counter, not a tea room

The format shapes what the branch is good for. There is no dining room and no seating; you choose from the case, take the box or the bag, and go. That is a different proposition from the Grand-Rue flagship, which runs as a café restaurant, or Cloche d'Or, which pairs a shop with a bistro. Nor is this a workshop with the bread bench on view, since the theatre of production belongs to the bigger addresses. What this one offers instead is the full Oberweis range at the exact point where people are moving through the city, which makes it the branch used most casually and most often.

Chocolate first, then something for the journey

Buy chocolate. It is the part of the house with the clearest claim, and boxed bonbons survive a train better than a cream cake does. After that, the pastry specialities and macarons are the obvious sweet additions, and the ice cream pots are worth knowing about in summer. For anything more substantial, the sandwiches, pâté and terrine turn the stop into a meal noticeably better than the surroundings would suggest. The house is a Relais Desserts member, and this counter is the least ceremonious way to find out what that means. In the morning rush, between trains or on the way back into the city, it is the most useful counter in the building.
