Why go

The acai is organic grade A and arrives under Nalo Meli honey, which is a more specific promise than most bowls on the island make. That bowl is the founding idea. Four friends from South America, drawn together by surf, opened the first Nalu in Kailua in 2014 because they could not find acai they recognised.

Local roasters behind the counter

The drinks side is built almost entirely from island suppliers. Coffee is roasted by Kailua Town Coffee Roasters, cold brew comes from Hoku Coffee, flavour syrups from Pono Potions, and the kombucha is brewed locally by Sky Kombucha. Espresso, pressed juices, fresh juices and smoothies fill out the rest of the board.

That sourcing is the through-line rather than a flourish. Nalu's line is “Fresh, Healthy, & Made with Aloha,” and the drinks list reads like the food list: short, local and assembled to order rather than poured from a mix.

One menu, four views

Nalu now runs across Oahu, with shops in Kailua Town, on the North Shore at Hale‘iwa, in Kaka’ako at South Shore Market and at Waikiki Beach Walk. The brand's own phrase for it is “same menu, same ingredients, different view,” and that is accurate. The format holds steady and only the outlook changes.

Service is quick and counter-led, with front and back stations building bowls, wraps and sandwiches to order. It is a daytime room rather than a dining room, better suited to a stop before or after the water than to a long sit-down meal, and the house shorthand for it is “good food, ready when you are.”

Order the acai bowl, then look savoury

Start with the bowl. Organic grade A acai and Nalo Meli honey are the two details that separate it from the generic version, and it is the dish the whole brand grew out of.

If you want something more substantial, the savoury half runs to wraps, sandwiches, salads, ahi and portobello. The ahi is local and never frozen, supplied by Garden and Valley Isle Seafood, and the sauces are made in house from fresh ingredients. Gluten-free and vegan baked goods come from ‘Ulu & Kalo Bakery, and the gluten-free sandwich bread from local baker My Fit Bread, so the dietary options are sourced rather than improvised. Vegetarian and vegan orders sit inside the standard menu rather than off to one side of it.

Frequently asked questions

What is Nalu Health Bar & Cafe known for?

Organic grade A acai bowls finished with Nalo Meli honey, which is the dish the brand was founded on in Kailua in 2014. Around that sit pressed and fresh juices, smoothies, espresso, local cold brew and kombucha, plus wraps, salads, sandwiches and ahi for anyone who wants something savoury instead.

Where does the coffee at Nalu come from?

Almost entirely from Oahu suppliers. The beans are roasted by Kailua Town Coffee Roasters, the cold brew comes from Hoku Coffee, and the flavour syrups are made by Pono Potions. Kombucha is brewed locally by Sky Kombucha. The drinks list is short and built the same way the food is, from island producers rather than national distributors.
