MooTime Creamery

Why go

The counter is a wall of tubs, fresh waffle cones and candy toppings, and the ice cream behind it is made from scratch, high in butterfat and churned slowly for a dense set. MooTime Creamery has been a Coronado fixture since 1998, when owner David Spatafore of Blue Bridge Hospitality changed the planned Motown-inspired name MooTown to MooTime, sidestepping trademark limits and a single music theme.

A bright Coronado creamery

Frozen dessert is the whole point, served in a lively, family-friendly room. The ice cream is made in house with a high-butterfat base churned at low speed, which gives it a denser texture than gelato. That production detail matters: this is a working creamery with a monthly flavour rotation and house novelties, not a freezer case of bought-in tubs.

The range covers 30 classic flavours, Islander Crunch among them, chocolate ice cream with toasted coconut and macadamia nuts. A Flavor of the Month programme keeps the counter moving between familiar standards and rotating options, and the shop has drawn vacationers and local families for more than twenty-five years.

Neon, nostalgia and counter service

This is a counter-service dessert shop built around a retro parlour setting rather than table service. A neon-lettered sign marks the entrance and an Elvis Presley statue greets guests, setting a classic Americana tone. Inside are the tubs, the waffle cones, retro bottled sodas such as Coke, root beer and Fanta, and candy toppings ranged along the counters.

The atmosphere is playful and busy, basically a kiddieland that adults want a part of too. Lines can stretch out of the door but they move quickly, which suits the walk-up rhythm. The counter also builds floats and sundaes, with cookie dough, graham cracker, butterscotch, hot fudge, whipped cream, maraschino cherries, Kit Kats, M&M’s and Heath bars on hand.

Order the MooTaco first

For the clearest read on the house’s signature side, start with the MooTaco: a homemade waffle shell filled with ice cream and either cookie dough or chocolate fudge, dipped in chocolate and finished with sprinkles, peanuts or chocolate chips. Bonbons are bite-sized balls of ice cream rolled in chocolate and drizzled with more. Mookies carry the housemade theme into ice cream sandwiches, with MooTime ice cream pressed between two house-baked cookies.

For a sundae, the Monkey Love is the most specific choice: vanilla layered with peanut butter, hot fudge and bananas, finished with whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles and a cherry. Between the MooTaco, the Bonbons, the Mookies, Islander Crunch, a retro bottled-soda float and a toppings-heavy sundae, the nostalgic end of the menu is where the shop is strongest.
