Kiku

Records turn on the third floor of Yap Ah Shak House and the coffee is poured to match. Kiku, written きく, is a jazz kissa in Chow Kit that works as a coffee counter, a quiet bar and a listening room in one small space. Its own line, “where vinyl spins, coffee flows, and time doesn’t exist,” describes the pace better than any single category would.

A listening room that also feeds you

The room is compact and music-led rather than a bright, high-turnover cafe. Jazz on vinyl sets the tempo, and the Japanese-inflected calm of the space is the point rather than a decorative layer over it. Expect a peaceful, intimate mood and a small number of seats.

The kitchen is more serious than a listening bar usually runs. The menu is pork-free Japanese: donburi, soba, ramen, gyoza and yakitori, plus Curry Katsu and Hamburg Don, a katsu sandwich and curry katsu. Those are full plates rather than bar snacks, which is why Kiku moves between cafe, bar and restaurant depending on when you walk in.

Coffee, vinyl and the room’s rhythm

Coffee sits inside the concept rather than beside it. The kissa format ties Japanese coffee-house ritual to a record collection, and specialty coffee shares the counter with the drinks list. Arriving early gives you the coffee-forward version of the room; later, it settles into bar and listening territory as the volume and the crowd change.

Getting up to the third floor is part of the experience. Yap Ah Shak House is a restored building in Chow Kit, and Kiku sits at the top of it, deliberately quiet and deliberately small, closer to a Japanese listening room than to a Kuala Lumpur coffee chain.

Order the tiramisu, then a curry katsu

The tiramisu is the named dessert to remember and a good anchor for a short visit built around coffee and records. It is the one sweet the kitchen puts its name to.

For a fuller meal, work through the Japanese and Japanized-Western side: curry katsu, the katsu sandwich, Curry Katsu and Hamburg Don, or the noodle and rice dishes. Pork-free is the kitchen’s clear position across the whole menu, which shapes the yakitori and donburi as much as the sandwiches. A bowl of soba or a donburi with a coffee, then the tiramisu, is the version of Kiku that uses both halves of the room.
