Why go
Filter coffee from Copenhagen Coffee Lab is the starting point at KALA, a family-run café, coffee bar and brasserie in Nørrebro. The family chose that roaster for a shared focus on taste and craftsmanship, and the rest of the menu is built outward from the cup: matcha, brunch plates, bakes and, later on, a spritz. The house talks about quality, good atmosphere and hygge as much as about the food, and the room is arranged to deliver all three.
Coffee, matcha and something colder
The drinks list is wider than an espresso counter's. Filter coffee, espresso, americano, cortado, flat white, cappuccino and latte cover the coffee side, with iced coffee and cold brew for warm afternoons. Matcha latte and chai latte, hot chocolate and tea fill in around them.
Then the list turns. The KALA spritz, a Hugo spritz and an espresso martini place the room between a daytime coffee bar and a neighbourhood spot you might still be sitting in at six. Matcha reappears in the food as matcha chia porridge with organic yogurt, granola and berries, which is the clearest bridge between the two halves of the menu.
Bread, eggs and bakes all day
The food has the shape of an all-day café. Croissants, cinnamon rolls, cookies and banana bread with hazelnut cream hold the bakery end, while organic yogurt with granola and compote and a small breakfast plate cover the lighter morning.
Savoury runs through bread. Avocado on toasted sourdough or rye, toasted sourdough with whipped cream cheese and cold-smoked salmon, a serrano sandwich, an egg sandwich, a vegetarian sandwich and the KALA salad make up the substantial end of the menu without turning the room into a restaurant.
Ordering, and the rest of KALA
For coffee, start with filter or a cortado, knowing whose beans they are. For the non-coffee route, take the matcha latte, or the matcha chia porridge with a hot drink beside it. Tea, chai and hot chocolate cover the rest.
For food, keep it simple with a croissant or a cinnamon roll, or go savoury with avocado on sourdough or the salmon toast. The house also runs catering and events, a members' club and gift cards, and sells coffee, cups, plates and tableware, so a visit can end with something to take home. The tone throughout is calm and informal: step in off the street, sit down, and stay a while.
