Why go

A working roastery with a café in front

The roaster runs on weekdays and you can watch it: green beans turning brown a few metres from where the coffee is served. Kaffa Roastery has worked this way in Punavuori since 2007, part café bar, part production floor, and home to the Helsinki School of Coffee, so there is usually training or tasting going on alongside the everyday business of pouring cups.

The coffees are roasted on site and many come from single estates, sourced with an emphasis on sustainability and treated delicately enough to keep the fruit in them. Cascara sits alongside the beans, and the shop side runs to equipment, subscriptions and gifts for anyone who wants to take the operation home with them. In 2019 Kaffa was voted Finland's best coffee shop at the Helsinki Coffee Festival, and it appears in the 2025 European Coffee Trip Awards.

Industrial room, barista-led bar

The setting is industrial rather than domestic, and the smell of roasting is part of the experience. What makes the counter different from most is that the brewing method is a choice rather than a default: espresso, drip or pour-over, decided between you and the barista instead of dictated by whichever machine happens to be switched on.

That turns a simple order into a short conversation, which is the point of a roastery café. It also means the pace changes with what you ask for. A pour-over is a wait; a drip coffee is not. The room absorbs both, with enough space to sit and a steady weekday rhythm from the people who work nearby.

Coffee first, then an almond croissant

Order coffee before anything else and let the bar steer the choice. Ask what is on and whether the pour-over is worth the wait that day, since the single-estate lots rotate and the differences between them are the whole reason this place exists.

Food is a supporting act, kept deliberately light. The almond croissant is the named pastry and the obvious partner for a filter coffee; sandwiches cover the savoury side; smoothies are there for anyone who does not want a second coffee. Wine and beer are served too, which lets the café bar work later into the day than a roastery normally would. Take a bag of beans on the way out and the visit joins up.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Kaffa Roastery?

Order coffee first and let the bar guide the method, since espresso, drip and pour-over are all offered and the single-estate lots rotate. The almond croissant is the named pastry and the natural partner for a filter coffee, with sandwiches and smoothies covering everything else.

Can you watch the coffee being roasted?

Yes. The roaster runs on weekdays a few metres from the counter, so the green-to-brown part of the process happens in front of you rather than in a warehouse elsewhere. The Helsinki School of Coffee is based here too, so tastings and training often run alongside normal service.
