Why go

Roastery, brunch, bottega

Il Cafetero describes itself in three words, roastery, brunch and bottega, and all three are true of the same small room. The roasting has been done artisanally in Milan since July 2023, and the way the coffee is talked about borrows from wine: velvety and sweet at one end, lively and fruity at the other, with notes of chocolate, flowers, berries or spices depending on the lot.

Brewing goes well past espresso. V60, Aeropress, Moka and Chemex all have a place, and the roasting is adjusted for them, more intense and chocolate-forward for espresso, more delicate and fruit-led for filter. Alongside the coffee, the counter holds handmade croissants, a pistachio croissant, brioche, pasticciotti from Puglia, waffles and small sandwiches, with flat white, ice latte and cappuccino covering the milk drinks. The counter is a bottega as much as a bar, so a visit can end with a bag of beans as easily as with an empty cup.

A neighbourhood counter away from the centre

The feel is casual and intimate, a local coffee stop in a lively residential quarter rather than a tourist-core espresso bar. It draws people who want specialty brewing, beans to take away and someone to talk them through both, and the service is quick, polite and warm. Being away from the tourist centre is part of why it works: the trade here is local and repeat rather than passing.

It is not a room for large groups, since only two tables seat more than three, so the natural rhythm is a solo coffee, a small breakfast, a quick brunch plate or a conversation at a compact table. The cafe side also connects to roasted coffee sales and tasting boxes, so a visit can move from a cup at the counter to choosing beans for the machine at home.

What to order

Start with the coffee style you want to understand. For milk drinks that means a flat white, an ice latte or a cappuccino. For the specialty side, ask what is on espresso and what is on filter, since the two are roasted differently on purpose, and try the same coffee both ways if the bar has it. The espresso tasting box shows how seriously the shop takes choosing beans for a home machine.

For food, stay with what recurs: handmade croissants, the pistachio croissant, brioche, Puglian pasticciotti and waffles, with the small sandwiches for anyone treating the stop as lunch.
