Craft coffee in the Portola, ube and chai included

The counter pours craft coffee, lattes and chai, with seasonal drinks that change often enough to be worth asking after. Hey Neighbor opened in San Francisco in the summer of 2021, soft-opening on 27 June during the Portola Brunch Hop, in a room that had sat empty for months after Four Barrel left it. The café is black-owned, LGBTQ-owned and women-owned, and the name is the whole invitation: a neighborhood room first. The chai latte is the staple on the spiced side, an ube latte takes an order somewhere more distinctive, and the yuzu and chocolate truffle latte poured at the soft opening shows how the seasonal specials tend to go, citrus and chocolate and a little play.

A room the neighborhood uses

Taking over the old Four Barrel space could have been a new sign on a familiar counter, and it was not. The room turned more intimate and more local, a Portola Garden District hub that regulars describe as feeling like home. It runs on more than coffee service, with free play sessions and other community gatherings giving it a life outside the morning rush, and it gets used for conversation and for meeting people as much as for a cup to carry out.

What to order

Start with an ube latte if you want the drink that says most about the place, or a chai latte for something spiced and milk-based. Ask what the seasonal special is, since that is where new ideas land first. On the savory side the food leans into pickled and fermented flavors drawn from several kitchens at once: beni shoga, do chua, kimchi, sauerkraut, dill pickles, caperberries, beets, lemons and spring mix all turn up, which makes the food read as kitchen-led rather than a tray of muffins next to the till.
