Why go

Roasted to order, in small batches

Roasting to order in small batches is the operating principle at Gato Legal, and everything on the counter follows from it. This is a Madeira specialty-coffee roastery with a café built around it, working only with 100% specialty arabica and putting traceability and direct relationships with growers ahead of volume. The house blend is Mistura de Bananeiros, a light-to-medium roast that stays smooth across brewing methods, with chocolate, nuts, sweetness and caramelised fruit; it is sold as whole beans, ground and in Nespresso-compatible capsules. For a darker cup, the Honduras from Santa Rosa de Copán goes heavier, with dark chocolate, sugar cane and yellow peach. Cat Out The Bag, Rwanda Gakenke and Rwanda Kizi Rift widen the shelf beyond the house line.

A working roastery on the west of the island

The Ponta do Pargo address is the roastery itself, which is what separates it from the brand’s Calheta kiosk. Coffee is roasted, poured and sold in the same building, so a visit can be a flat white, a bag to take home, or the smell of a live roast running while you sit. Gato Legal has been part of the Madeira specialty scene since 2022 and keeps its language plain, aiming at approachable coffee rather than a technical lecture. The room is friendly and often full, and the counter serves breakfast, brunch and lunch alongside the coffee, so the café side is a genuine kitchen rather than a shelf of packaged cake beside the till.

Flat white, then banana bread

Start with a flat white, especially if the plan is to try the café before choosing beans. For coffee to take away, Mistura de Bananeiros is the house route, light-to-medium with chocolate, nut and caramelised-fruit notes, while the Honduras is the choice if a darker profile suits better. For food, the sweet side gives the clearest path: banana bread beside the coffee, lemon meringue for something sharper, or caramel cheesecake when richness is the point. Bolo do caco brings in the local savoury option, including a vegetarian version, and it is the order that ties the counter to the island rather than to the coffee circuit. Treat Gato Legal as a roastery first, and let the cakes and the bolo do caco fill out the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Gato Legal?

A flat white to try the café side, then choose beans. Mistura de Bananeiros is the house blend, light-to-medium with chocolate, nut and caramelised-fruit notes, and the Honduras from Santa Rosa de Copán is the darker option. For food, banana bread, lemon meringue, caramel cheesecake and bolo do caco.

Is Gato Legal a roastery or a café?

Both, in the same building. Coffee is roasted to order in small batches from 100% specialty arabica, and the café serves breakfast, brunch and lunch alongside it. The Ponta do Pargo address is the roastery, which is what distinguishes it from the brand’s Calheta kiosk elsewhere on the island.
