Why go
Espresso is pulled at a counter barely deeper than the machine, and the beans behind it were roasted by the same company that owns the room. Four Letter Word has roasted since 2014 and opened this compact Logan Square shop in 2018, with a second address on Burgazada in Istanbul.
A roastery’s own counter
The draw is direct: a tight coffee bar backed by an in-house roasting programme rather than a café buying its whole menu in. The house talks about producer stewardship, transparency and accountability, and about quality beginning long before beans reach the roastery. The team is shaped by design as much as by coffee, and treats the drink as something communal rather than transactional.
That shows in the coffees. Ethiopia Kebena, Colombia Huila Community, Brazil Matas, Colombia Sidra de Luz, Ecuador Juan Peña La Papaya Sidra and Ethiopia Aba Mecha have all come through, in washed, natural and 777 double-fermentation processing. Tasting notes run from black tea, melon and lemon to cocoa, peanut butter brittle, lime, chocolate, floral tones, caramelised candy and pink Starburst. The list turns over as those lots move through, so two visits a month apart rarely look the same on the board.
Counter service, small footprint
The rhythm is simple. Order, wait for a drink made carefully, and sit briefly if a seat is free. This is a coffee bar rather than a lounge, and the design is restrained rather than decorative for its own sake, which suits a shop whose main argument is the roast.
Pastries come from Cellar Door Provisions next door, which keeps the food side short and good without pulling the counter into a kitchen operation. The Chicago room reads as the retail expression of a serious roasting company, not as a restaurant with coffee attached, and the single-origin shelf behind the bar is part of the same argument.
Order espresso, then a filter
Start with espresso for the clearest read on the house style. Batch brew keeps a filter order simple, while pour over is the closer look at whichever single origin is rotating that week. Beans go home too, by the bag, by subscription or through the wholesale side, so a visit can end at the retail shelf rather than at the till.
Food is complementary rather than a menu in its own right. Take a Cellar Door pastry with whichever coffee you have chosen, and let the roasting do the talking.

Does Four Letter Word roast its own coffee?
Yes. The company has roasted since 2014, and the Chicago shop is its own retail counter, opened in 2018, with a second address on Burgazada in Istanbul. Coffees appear in washed, natural and 777 double-fermentation processing, and bags and subscriptions are available for anyone brewing at home.
