Surf and skate history in the frame

The name does real work. Dogtown is the territory tied to 1970s Southern California surf and skate culture and to the Z-Boys who came out of it, and the cafe is built as a nod to that history rather than as a neutral coffee counter. The original coffeehouse was a well-used local hangout, so the outpost arrives with neighbourhood credibility in place. The hotel says the culture can be seen across every inch of the room, which is the point: the coffee is contemporary, the reference is local and specific, and the two are meant to be read together rather than separately.
