Four Barrel espresso under a Jurassic joke

The counter at Dinosaur Coffee pours Four Barrel, the San Francisco roaster, through espresso and drip, with pour-overs when the bar has room and a matcha programme that gets as much attention as the coffee. The shop opened in Silver Lake, on the east side of Los Angeles, in late 2014 and is woman-owned and POC-owned, and its dinosaur branding, all Jurassic Perk and brewing since the Jurassic period of the 2010s, is a joke it commits to without letting it interfere with the drinks. Song Tea supplies the loose-leaf side, which runs across white, green, black, oolong and pu-erh. Pastries sit on the counter as company for the cup rather than as a kitchen in their own right. A bright room built around the counter

The room is light, minimal and open, with plain furniture and enough natural light that attention lands on the bar. Counter service sets the pace: order at the front, wait for the drink, then either take it out or settle in for as long as the seat holds. It works equally as a short stop, a casual meeting point or a place to sit with a laptop when a seat opens. The mood shifts through the day, quiet in stretches and busy in bursts, which is the normal rhythm of a Silver Lake neighbourhood coffee shop. The dinosaur theme surfaces in the drinks as well as the signage, with matcha builds such as Jurassic Dreams, and the shop sells its own mugs, tote bags and beanies if the joke lands.

Espresso first, matcha second

Start with a Four Barrel espresso drink, since the roaster relationship is the backbone of the programme and a latte or cappuccino shows what the blend does with milk. Drip is the fastest order; a pour-over is the slower one and worth asking about when the bar is not slammed. Then move to matcha, which is where the shop's personality shows most clearly, dinosaur-themed builds included. Tea drinkers should look at the Song Tea list instead, since those leaves are good enough to drink on their own rather than buried under milk. Add a pastry for a full stop. There is a sister operation, Woodcat Coffee, in Echo Park, but this one keeps its own identity: bright room, good beans, no ceremony.
