Why go

An espresso bar with the numbers on show

The double espresso at Cottage Roasters 1010 is specified rather than improvised: 18 grams in, 50 millilitres out, in about 25 seconds, with clean baskets, portafilters rinsed and wiped between shots, stable temperature and filtered water. That level of detail is why this small bar in the historic centre of Vienna exists, and none of it is hidden. Preparation is deliberately open to whoever is standing at the counter.

The coffee arrives freshly roasted from the company’s own roastery out in Währing, so the espresso bar is tied to a roasting project rather than a bought-in house blend. The machine is a Black Eagle Maverick, the same competition machine used at the World Barista Championships, which tells you where the priorities sit. Espresso and cappuccino are the core orders, with hot chocolate for anyone off coffee.

A modern bar inside an old Viennese room

The room was previously the small Diglas, and the renovation kept the traditional Vienna setting while dropping a modern bar into the middle of it. The result is a hybrid: a compact central coffee bar with specialty habits, but also a social meeting place in the older Viennese sense, where sitting for an hour is expected rather than tolerated.

Seating, careful lighting and a casual atmosphere do the rest, a short walk from Stephansdom and surrounded by Jugendstil buildings. Drinks are ordered and collected at the bar for much of the guest flow, and the room works equally for a solo visit with a laptop, a breakfast, a lunch or a slow dessert. The point of the pairing is that neither half apologises for the other.

Espresso first, then strudel or Kardinalschnitte

The way to read this menu is coffee and pastry together. Start with the espresso, since that is where the measuring and the roasting show up, then move to the case. The pastries are made in house, which is the other half of the argument: specialty coffee standards on one side, genuinely homemade Viennese baking on the other.

The sweets are recognisably Viennese. Apple strudel is the obvious first choice, with vanilla sauce if you want it richer. Kardinalschnitte is the more distinctive order, all meringue and cream, and Schaumschnitte sits nearby. Beyond those there are poppyseed and apple tart, berry chocolate cake, Sachertorte and custard. Order one of each kind, coffee and cake, and the place explains itself in a single sitting.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Cottage Roasters 1010?

Espresso first, because the measuring and the roasting are what this bar is built on: 18 grams in, 50 millilitres out, in about 25 seconds. Then take something from the pastry case, which is made in house. Apple strudel is the obvious choice and Kardinalschnitte the more distinctive one.

Where does the coffee come from?

From the company’s own roastery out in Währing, delivered freshly roasted to the city-centre bar, so the espresso is tied to a roasting project rather than a bought-in blend. It is pulled on a Black Eagle Maverick, the competition machine used at the World Barista Championships, with preparation left open to view.
