Why go

Roasted in Vienna, poured in the Ninth

Coffee Pirates roasts its own coffee in Vienna and has done since 2012, which is why the counter behaves the way it does. The house interest is in showing how a coffee tastes according to origin, variety and roast profile, so the same bar will pour a Viennese Melange and a single-origin filter without treating either as a novelty. The organic side of the range is central rather than decorative: Pirates Blend BIO and Troublestarter BIO anchor the blends, with single origins running to El Salvador Tato’s Choice, Colombia La Red de Ecolsierra BIO, Brazil Fazenda Recreio, Congo Luki Zamba and a Vietnamese lot fermented with Pichia yeast. The range is organized by intent as much as by origin, with coffees pointed at modern espresso, at classic espresso, or at filter, which is a useful shortcut when you are buying a bag rather than a cup.

Sourcing that gets talked about at the bar

Buying is part of the craft here. The roastery works through importers including Nordic Approach and Mercanta, visits farms and cooperatives directly, and is explicit about fair pay and long-term relationships with growers rather than switching lots on price alone. That transparency is the point of the whole exercise: if a roast is meant to show what one farm did, the farm has to be named and paid. The room around it is deliberately unfussy, relaxed and coffee-focused rather than formal, set in the Ninth District near the university campus and the old courtyards of the Altes AKH, where the crowd skews to students and people working through an afternoon.

Order filter first, then a Melange

Filter coffee is the first order because it is where the roasting shows. The bar brews on V60, Kalita, AeroPress and Chemex, and usually offers more than one coffee for those methods, so the choice is a real one rather than a default. A double espresso made from selected beans is the shortest way to read the roast style if you would rather not sit with a carafe. Flat white is the milk drink to order when you want the specialty side with dairy in it. Then there are the Viennese classics, Melange and Kleiner Brauner, which the bar keeps on the list and makes with the same beans, so the local register and the specialty one meet in the same cup. For something cold, the named house drink is cold drip.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Coffee Pirates?

Filter coffee, brewed on V60, Kalita, AeroPress or Chemex, since that is where the roasting is easiest to taste and there is usually more than one coffee to choose from. A double espresso reads the roast style faster, a flat white covers the milk side, and cold drip is the house cold order.

Where does Coffee Pirates get its beans?

It roasts in Vienna and buys through specialty importers including Nordic Approach and Mercanta, visiting farms and cooperatives directly. Much of the range is organic, and the blends and single origins are chosen to show differences of origin, variety and roast profile rather than to hold one house flavor.
