Why go

Weighed shots, and roasters worth naming

Shots are weighed and the station is kept clean, which tells you most of what you need to know about how this bar is run. The coffee comes from other people’s roasteries rather than its own, chosen rather than blended in-house: Amsterdam names such as Lot Sixty One and Common Greens have poured here, alongside single origins from Rotterdam’s Single Estate Coffee. Espresso, flat white and filter coffee all sit on the menu, with espresso pulled on a La Marzocco Linea PB. There is a house blend too, a Coffee District collaboration with Five Ways, for anyone who wants to take the bar home in a bag.

A bright Oud Zuid room near Vondelpark

Coffee District started as a small South Amsterdam coffee bar in 2017, a few hundred metres from where it stands now, and the permanent café opened at the end of 2019 under Rosa and Adil Loukane. It grew again by early 2021. The room is bright and friendly, with stained glass windows and a retro bar, wooden benches under terraced plane trees outside, tables by the windows with a small garden view, and a large portrait of Nelson Mandela on the back wall.

What the bar sells beyond coffee is consistency. The stated aim is that a visit feels the same every time, with the team staying calm when the counter is busy and the guest coming first. That makes it a daily routine for the neighbourhood rather than a one-off stop, and it suits people walking back from the park as much as regulars who order without reading anything.

Order the flat white, then look at the pastries

Start with the coffee, because that is where the detail sits. A flat white is the fastest read on whichever roaster is currently on the bar, espresso is the shorter version, and filter coffee is the order when you want the single origin to speak for itself. If none of those appeal, the matcha latte is made carefully in stages rather than dumped together.

Food is best approached through the pastry case, which runs to pastries and a few desserts from the bar, chosen to pair with coffee rather than to stand in for brunch. There is no hot kitchen, so treat the case as the accompaniment and the cup as the reason to be there.

Frequently asked questions

Whose coffee does Coffee District pour?

Other roasters, chosen rather than roasted in-house. Amsterdam names such as Lot Sixty One and Common Greens have been on the bar, along with single origins from Rotterdam’s Single Estate Coffee. Espresso is pulled on a La Marzocco Linea PB with the shots weighed, and there is a house blend made with Five Ways.

What should I order on a first visit?

A flat white, which reads whichever roaster is on the bar most quickly, or an espresso for the shorter version. Filter coffee is the order when you want a single origin to speak for itself, and the matcha latte is the non-coffee option. Add something from the pastry case rather than expecting a hot kitchen.
