Baristas, not a self-service urn

The distinction that matters here is staffing. Coffee Corner is a manned counter with dedicated baristas rather than a pot on a sideboard, which is not a given in a hotel of this size. It sits just inside the entrance to Jack Dusty at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, and it handles espresso drinks, drip coffee and a short run of light breakfast pastries, which is enough to stand in for breakfast without becoming one. The order is made to your specification and handed over, and that is the whole transaction. Espresso if the day is starting properly, drip if it is starting slowly.

The room it borrows

Jack Dusty is the hotel's waterfront seafood restaurant, built around a marble bar set beside a fresh seafood display and looking out over the downtown marina. Coffee Corner inherits that view without inheriting the meal, which is the useful part: you get the good room at the hour when nothing is happening in it yet, with the boats still and the water flat. The restaurant takes its cues from local maritime tradition, and the early hour is when that reads least like decoration and most like the working waterfront the hotel is built beside.

The restaurant's own service is a separate proposition entirely, with local ingredients, craft microbrews and cocktails running through to late. The coffee counter is the quiet first shift of the same address, and it clears out well before the dining room fills. Two rooms in one, working opposite ends of the clock.

Where it sits among the hotel's counters

The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota runs several food and drink outlets that each answer a different part of the day: Rufa, Ridley's Porch, Kemp's Market, the Golf Club Grille and the Lido Key Tiki Bar, alongside Jack Dusty itself. Coffee Corner is the narrowest of them by design, and the most useful if the plan involves getting out of the building early rather than settling into it.

Take an espresso drink and a pastry, take the marina view while it is empty, and carry the second cup toward Lido Key. As a destination it is modest; as the first ten minutes of a Sarasota morning, with the marina on one side and the beach ahead, it is hard to improve on.
