Espresso and brewed coffee lead at Coffee By Joy, a specialty coffee cafe in Toronto’s Junction Triangle that runs a contemporary art program alongside the counter. The house line is “the most peaceful cafe in Toronto,” and the room is arranged to earn it: minimalist, contemplative, and quiet enough that the work on the walls registers. A Toronto couple started it and stays out of the story, which suits a place where the room, the cup and the art carry the identity.

A coffee bar with a gallery program

The art is structural rather than decorative. In autumn 2024 the cafe hosted COMMON ELEVATION, an exhibition that ran from 17 October to 18 November inside the ordinary rhythm of coffee service. That makes Coffee By Joy a coffee-and-art hybrid rather than a patisserie or a brunch room, and it gives the visit a second half once the drink is made.

Its three stated pillars are specialty coffee, craftsmanship and art. Espresso-based drinks and brewed coffee carry the menu, and the Sterling Road setting fits: the Junction Triangle draws artists, designers and design-minded food businesses, so the cafe reads as a neighbourhood anchor rather than a high-volume stop.

Counter service, then a long sit

Order at the front counter, collect from the staff, and settle in if you are staying. There is no table service and no dining-room choreography, so the pace is closer to a slow cafe visit than a meal. The seating is there for people who want to stay with the work rather than turn over quickly.

The sequence most guests fall into is simple: an espresso or a latte, a seat, then time with whatever is hanging. It is a small enough operation that the current exhibition changes the feel of the room more than a menu change would.

Coffee first, pastry beside it

Come coffee first. Baking is not the craft on display, and the sweet things sit beside the cup rather than leading it. There is no bread program or lamination work here, and the counter does not pretend otherwise.

What appears is seasonal and small in number. One autumn pairing set a hojicha latte next to a pumpkin spice cake, which is the clearest picture of how the drinks and the bakes work together. For a focused visit, order an espresso-based drink or a brewed coffee, add whatever seasonal cake is out, and treat the art as part of the order rather than the backdrop.
