Order at the window and drink it outside; there is no room to do anything else. Captain + Stoker's Pacific Grove shop is the small-format branch of a Monterey roastery, open here since 2022, and the coffee is roasted by the company that owns the window.

A roastery's small shop

The company roasts daily and puts the phrase on everything: stocked and stoked. That is the whole proposition, because this branch is the retail end of a roasting operation with sites in Monterey, Pacific Grove and Sand City rather than a standalone café buying beans from elsewhere. Espresso drinks are the clearest orders, with lattes and the iced vanilla latte the ones people name, poured with enough care that the latte art is part of the appeal. Cold coffee is the other thing the company is known for, since it sells a cold brew extract and a canned cold brew blend alongside the bar, so what you drink at the window also goes home in the bag.

Order at the window, sit outside

There is no dining room. The format is a small storefront built around a walk-up window with outdoor seating, so the pattern is simple: approach, order, wait, and take the cup either onto the street or to the picnic table outside. That makes it a morning or daytime stop, a pause while moving through Pacific Grove, or a grab-and-go on a routine rather than somewhere to spend an afternoon. The lack of indoor space is the defining constraint and also the character; the shop sits between a neighbourhood coffee counter and a branded roastery outpost, quick for takeaway and easy to fold into a daily loop.

Iced vanilla latte, or go colder

The iced vanilla latte is the order people name most often here, and a straight latte is the plainer version of the same idea, both pulled from the house's own roast rather than a guest coffee. If you want something colder and less sweet, ask for cold brew; it is the drink the company has built a small retail line around, and it makes more sense than a hot cup on a bright coastal morning. For food, keep it to pastry. Fresh bakes are the extent of the kitchen, and the croissant is the one customers pair with coffee most consistently. Anything larger belongs somewhere with tables.
