Café Ludwig

Coffee and cake are the entry point, but the kitchen at Café Ludwig is doing considerably more than that. The Petuelpark room has run for more than twenty years as breakfast café, restaurant and event space in one, on the Schwabing side of Munich, in a park laid out for artists.

Kaffee und Kuchen, then a full kitchen

The house puts it plainly: not only good coffee and cake. From there the menu opens into German classics, international plates, vegetarian dishes and a changing daily special, which places it closer to a park restaurant with café habits than to a specialty coffee bar. Schweinebraten and Schnitzel Wiener-Art hold the German side. Cheeseburger, Cevapcici and pizza widen it for a table of mixed appetites. A park room built like a cube

The setting carries a lot of the appeal. Café Ludwig sits in Petuelpark rather than on a street corner, and the building is unusual: a seven-metre-high cube with a room inside the room. Indoors there is a restaurant and bar level plus a gallery above it, and the outdoor areas run into the park itself, with a garden lounge attached.

That scale explains the second identity. Alongside everyday meals the space takes celebrations and gatherings, which is why the same address reads as café, restaurant, bar and event location depending on the day.

How to use it

Come for breakfast if you want the café at its most characteristic, and note that the weekend breakfast menu is a separate one. Later in the day the daily specials are the sharper choice, since they change more often than the main list and show where the kitchen is paying attention.

Keep expectations calibrated on the drinks: this is honest Kaffee und Kuchen in a park rather than a single-origin bar, and the coffee is there to support the food. The food is the concrete part, from Schweinebraten and Schnitzel through burgers, Cevapcici, pizza, salads, soups and seasonal Nudeltaschen. Order accordingly, and treat the park itself as half the reason to be there.
