An all-day café at The Standard

Café Standard sits at the foot of The Standard on Cooper Square, and it works as a café in the European sense: open from early, table service throughout, and no clean break between the coffee part of the day and the drinking part. The room is calm in daylight and turns social after dark.

That is the most useful thing to know before choosing when to go, because the two versions of the room have very little in common beyond the address.

Daytime calm, evening noise

By day the windows and the terrace seating do most of the work, and tables turn over slowly enough to sit with a coffee and watch Cooper Square empty and fill. It is a good room for reading, for meeting one person, or for stopping between the East Village and everything north of it.

At night the same space gets loud, modern and deliberately sociable, closer to a bar than to a café, with people-watching as the main event. Two venues share one address, and which one you get depends entirely on the hour.

Hotel cafés often struggle to belong to the street outside, and this one solves the problem by opening onto it. Cooper Square is a wide, busy junction where the East Village meets NoHo, and a room with tables facing it inherits a constant supply of things to look at. The crowd shifts through the day with the square rather than against it, which is why the place reads as a neighbourhood fixture rather than as a lobby annexe.

Choosing a time rather than a dish

Because the room changes so completely, the plan matters more than the order. Go early for a quiet coffee and a seat facing the street. Go late if the point is the crowd, the noise and the sense of a hotel lobby spilling outward into the neighbourhood.

Table service means you can settle in for either without negotiating a counter. The patio is the seat worth asking for in decent weather, since it puts you on the square rather than beside it. And the East Village setting means whatever comes next, at either end of the day, is only ever a short walk from the door in any direction you choose.
