Why go

Lavender, honey and cardamom run through the drink list here, and the coffee underneath them is roasted by the owner a few miles away.

Coffee and espresso in Altadena

The program is a focused coffee and espresso list rather than a restaurant menu. The founder roasts Ethiopian and Central American coffees in a Monrovia garage, with Honduran coffee from the San Vicente region running through the story, a family connection carried into what goes in the hopper. The board stays straightforward: drip coffee, espresso drinks, lattes, cold brew, matcha lattes, loose-leaf teas, cream tops and pastries. Drip is balanced and smooth, espresso approachable rather than aggressive, and the matcha lattes, some built on house syrups, pull their own regulars. Pastries come from Bakers Kneaded, with a moist coffee muffin among the items worth catching. Coffee is the center, but the counter has enough range for a tea, a matcha or a flavored latte to be the reason for the walk.

A neighborhood counter with recent history

Bevel Coffee began as a Los Angeles pop-up in 2022, became a semi-permanent kiosk on Prime Pizza’s patio in 2023, and now occupies a 600-square-foot storefront with a bright interior, communal seating and a colorful hand-painted mural wrapped around the ordering counter. The casual counter-service style comes straight out of those pop-up years.

The Eaton Fire gave the shop a different weight. After a closure, it reopened and gave away drip coffee while residents were still dealing with ash, displacement and rebuilding plans, and regulars describe it as a grounding weekend fixture rather than just a coffee stop. Staff are warm and unpretentious, with a guest-first approach centered on making each person feel good, and the crowd mixes locals, displaced residents coming back for something familiar, weekend walkers and runners, and families looking for a pause near the mountains.

Start with lavender, queen bee or cardamom

The best first order is one of the flavored signatures. The Lavender Latte is creamy and floral with its sweetness kept under control, and it takes well to oat milk. The Queen Bee, a honey latte, is sweet without tipping over. The Cardamom Cold Brew is the balanced, smoother route, and cardamom is the flavor the shop is most associated with.

Other named drinks include the Vanilla Elderflower Latte, a Quad Americano and the Milk and Cookies Cream Top, made to order and a favorite among regulars. Loose-leaf teas and matcha lattes cover the non-coffee side, including matcha with a homemade syrup. Seasonal specials have run as far as a one-off Star Wars menu, but the core stays the same: self-roasted coffee in accessible forms, drip, espresso, latte, cold brew, matcha and cream tops, beside Bakers Kneaded pastries.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Bevel Coffee?

One of the flavored signatures. The Lavender Latte is creamy and floral without much sweetness and works well with oat milk, the Queen Bee is a restrained honey latte, and the Cardamom Cold Brew is the smoother, more balanced option. The Milk and Cookies Cream Top is made to order.

Does Bevel roast its own coffee?

Yes. The founder roasts Ethiopian and Central American coffees in a garage in nearby Monrovia, with Honduran coffee from the San Vicente region running through the shop’s story as a family connection. That coffee turns up as drip, espresso, cold brew and the flavored lattes the counter is known for.
