Why go

Espresso, flat white, and a bar that teaches

Coffee is the whole proposition: specialty-grade beans, pulled as espresso or built into a flat white by people who teach milk steaming for a living. The flat white is the drink to judge the bar on, because the training treats velvety milk as the real test of a barista, and the espresso is the other half of that lesson, short and unmilked.

Food is café-scale and deliberately so: Basque cheesecake, cakes, sandwiches, savoury bites and banana bread, with vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options in the case. Nobody is pretending this is a kitchen. It is what you eat next to the coffee.

Coffee shop, coffee school, design store

Barista Wave sits in Campo de Ourique and runs three things out of one small room. It is a coffee bar; it is a school, with four-hour workshops on pulling a clean espresso and steaming milk for a flat white; and it is a creative store selling exclusive designer posters. The owner has spent more than a decade in specialty coffee, and the teaching side sets the tone of everything else. The house calls itself a hub for specialty coffee, design and workshops, which is a fair account of how the space is divided, and none of the three parts feels bolted on to the others.

The room itself is small, welcoming and refined, with a design layer that runs past the cup. Wi-Fi and power outlets make it workable for an hour of laptop time, and dogs are allowed, which keeps it a neighbourhood stop rather than a place people photograph and leave.

What to order

Order the flat white first. It is the drink the workshops are built around and the quickest way to see whether the training holds up in service. Follow it with an espresso if you want the coffee unmilked, since the same beans read very differently short.

For food, the Basque cheesecake is the clearest first choice, dense and dark-topped against a milky coffee. Banana bread is the lighter alternative, and the sandwiches or savoury bites are there when the visit has to work as lunch. Take a seat rather than a cup to go: this is a small room built for staying, and the bar is worth watching while you do.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Barista Wave?

The flat white, since the shop teaches milk steaming and that drink is the clearest test of the bar. Follow it with an espresso to taste the same beans without milk. For food, Basque cheesecake is the first choice, with banana bread as the lighter option and sandwiches or savoury bites for lunch.

Can you work or take a coffee course at Barista Wave?

Both. There is Wi-Fi and there are power outlets, so an hour with a laptop is normal here, and dogs are welcome too. The same room runs four-hour barista workshops covering espresso extraction and steaming milk for a flat white, taught by an owner with more than a decade in specialty coffee.
