Auntie's House Bakery and Chocolatier

Auntie’s House works from a two-bite idea: the Chocolate Dipped Whoopie Ball, a Maine Whoopie Pie shrunk to snack size and coated in chocolate. It is the shop’s own creation and the reason most people come through the door of this Lower Village Kennebunk sweet shop, which is a counter-service confectionery and gift boutique rather than a bakery café.

The bake starts with the classic Maine Whoopie Pie and then compresses it. The Whoopie Ball is a fresh, two-bite version, dipped in chocolate and made in house rather than bought in, which turns a large dessert into something snackable for gifting, sharing or dropping into a mixed box.

Full-size Whoopie Pies stay on the counter alongside it, made from scratch in the shop’s own ovens. Around them sits an ever-changing lineup: home-style cookies, Cookie Dough Bites, made-to-order cakes, cheesecakes, truffles and chocolate-dipped bakery items. The case is less about bread, croissants and baguettes than about Maine sweets, chocolate work and celebration bakes.

This is a small Southern Maine sweet shop, not a seated bakery café. Browse the baked goods, chocolates and gift items, choose at the counter, and leave with a box or a bag. The shop sits just outside the heavier Dock Square tourist core, in the quieter Lower Village corridor, and keeps a home-style, neighborhood-bakery character.

The retail mix reaches past the edible. Auntie’s carries Maine-made gifts, art, jewelry and apparel from local artisans, so the room doubles as a small regional gift shop. Residents come in for familiar cookies, Whoopie Pies, cakes or chocolates; visitors working through the Kennebunks leave with Maine sweets and artisan pieces. Kennebunk is the original and remains the flagship, with a second Auntie’s House opened in Portland in early 2023.
