Why go

Three drip roasters at a time, one from California, one from elsewhere in the country and one from abroad, which is about as clear a statement of intent as a small San Jose counter can make.

Coffee, tea and a kitchen

A.M. Craft presents itself as coffee, tea and kitchen, so it is neither an espresso bar alone nor a pastry case with a machine behind it. Its stated aim is to brew coffee and tea from a culinary perspective while building kinship with the surrounding communities, and that language carries through to how the room is used: somewhere to sit down and talk to someone.

The coffee program has a defined shape. Three featured drip roasters run at a time, chosen as one Californian, one from elsewhere in the United States and one international. A July rotation named Flower Child from Oakland, La Cabra from Brooklyn and Tim Wendelboe from Oslo, which grounds the specialty identity in named roasters rather than generic beans.

A small room built for a low-key visit

The space is compact, clean, peaceful and naturally lit, with a neighborhood feel rather than a high-turnover dining-room rhythm. There is seating inside and out, including a good seat under a tree, and the room is built around connection rather than as a laptop-first coworking floor.

Service is part of the experience. Staff greet regulars by name, and the baristas are quick and genuinely attentive. The overall picture is a casual counter-service café with a calm pace, good for a coffee break, a pastry, or a quiet sit-down.

Order the drip flight, then a toast

The rotating drip program is the strongest starting point, especially when a flight is available: three coffees from different regions side by side, which is exactly the comparison the three-roaster rotation is designed to invite. Espresso is well pulled, and the seasonal lattes have their own following, among them a Gingerbread Latte with warm spice and latte art on top.

Other named drinks include Seasonal Bourbon Cherry Cold Brew, Toasted Marshmallow Latte, Vanilla Latte, Salted Caramel Coffee and matcha. Food is anchored by in-house milk and honey wheat toasts, dressed with fresh local and seasonal ingredients. The pastry side brings an everything croissant from Neighborhood Bakery in San Francisco, an ube croissant filled with ube cream, and a pistachio pastry.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at A.M. Craft?

The rotating drip is the starting point, and a flight of three is better still, since the café features one Californian roaster, one from elsewhere in the United States and one international at any given time. Add a milk and honey wheat toast, made in house, or the ube croissant.

Which roasters does A.M. Craft serve?

Three at a time, rotating: one from California, one from elsewhere in the country and one from abroad. A July rotation ran Flower Child from Oakland, La Cabra from Brooklyn and Tim Wendelboe from Oslo, which gives a fair idea of the range the counter is willing to pour.
